A Message From Karin Montejo

As a Division Chief in one of the largest police departments in the Southeastern United States, I have had the opportunity to interact with many women from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. One issue continuously becomes a topic of conversation: the lack of leadership training to advance to higher levels within their departments.

Recognizing the positive outcomes well-diversified law enforcement agencies experience, I have developed a series of leadership courses designed specifically for women in law enforcement. These courses are gender specific due to the low numbers of women achieving positions in command. Although tremendous strides have been made in recruiting and retaining women, there remains a substantial gap between the numbers of men and women in the ranks of lieutenant and higher.

These courses address areas that women historically have had little exposure or training, hindering their ability to effectively compete for command positions. These skills include, but are not limited to identifying leadership styles, building leadership skills, recognizing areas of communication breakdown, assessment center preparation, along with incorporating balance and stress management into their lives.

It is critical for the future of women in the field of law enforcement that we adequately prepare them to move forward and be competitive in their respective fields. Studies have shown that the recruitment and retention of women in law enforcement has had a significant and positive impact in policing.
